Protecting parental choice in education is near and dear to my heart.
From grade four all the way to graduation I was home schooled. My father taught in the public school system his entire life, mostly here in Red Deer. Even still, my parents wanted to educate me in an environment that catered to my individual needs.
I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a pilot and fly all over the world. Because of my dream to be a pilot, schooling had a heavy focus on math and physics to prepare me to go into the aviation industry. Homeschooling also provided a lot of religious freedoms not seen in other education choices. My parents were able to ensure I was taught Christian values throughout my entire life.
When I enrolled at Red Deer College for aviation I aced everything, including winning a low-level navigation contest in my first semester.
Having the freedom to home school allowed me to be prepared for the career of my choice. I ended up leaving aviation and eventually entered politics after some sales and real estate ventures. My heavy focus on math came in handy as the point person for the Wildrose Finance Portfolio.
This is my story. It shows how homeschooling allowed my parents to create a program specific to my aspirations. I may not have done near as well in aviation nor been as effective in the Finance Portfolio if school choice was not available.
This is just one reason of many why parental choice in education needs to be protected.
Choice is under attack.
We have seen that NDP led groups like Press Progress (source, source, source) and Public Interest Alberta (source) are advocating strongly for the end of school choice. We need to put a stop to this NOW!
The United Conservative Party passed a policy at our recent convention that protects parental choice in education. This is the first step. The next step will be to elect strong candidates that will stand by this policy. I promised (source) to support all the polices passed by the members and I still stand by that promise.
I have seen the benefits in my life, my friend’s lives, and the lives of Albertans that is gained through having choice in education.
If chosen as your United Conservative representative for Red Deer North, I will do everything in my power to protect parental choice in education.
